  6.        How to Find, Install and Test Multimedia MCI Drivers
  7. ======================================================================
  8. MPEG NOTE:  Microsoft Corporation has announced new support for MPEG,
  9. which is to be coming soon.  Currently, the only MPEG drivers Photodex
  10. has been able to find are buggy and not recommended.  When Microsoft
  11. releases their MPEG drivers, Photodex will make them available if
  12. possible and provide installation instructions.

  16. WHERE TO GET MCI DRIVERS
  17. ========================
  18. You can download freeware/shareware MCI drivers from all major on-line
  19. sources.  For each of the on-line services, follow the instructions on
  20. how to download each type of MCI driver.

  22. COMPUSERVE (WINCIM)

  24.    VIDEO FOR WINDOWS (.AVI files)

  26.      1) GO WINMM  (This is the MS Win Multimedia Forum.)
  27.      2) Select 'Browse' from the 'Library' menu.
  28.      3) Select the 'Video for Windows' library (Library 4.)
  29.      4) Find the file called 'VFW 1.1e Runtime' (VFW11E.ZIP)
  30.           and download.  (The file should be stored in the
  31.           C:\CSERVE\DOWNLOAD directory, unless you have the
  32.           WinCIM software installed elsewhere.)
  33.      5) Proceed to INSTALLING VIDEO FOR WINDOWS below.

  41.      2) Download the file QTINSTAL.EXE and follow the installation
  42.           instructions.  (The file should be stored in the path called
  43.           C:\CSERVE\DOWNLOAD directory, unless you have the WinCIM
  44.           software installed elsewhere.)

  92. HOW TO INSTALL MCI DRIVERS
  93. ==========================
  94. Follow the instructions below to install each type of MCI driver.

  97.    VIDEO FOR WINDOWS (.AVI files)

  99.      1) Create a directory to hold the setup program for Video for Windows.
  100.      2) Copy VFW11E.ZIP to the directory you created.
  101.      3) In a DOS shell (or WinZIP), log to the directory you created and
  102.           use PKUNZIP to decompress the VFW11E.ZIP file.  To do this, use,
  103.           the following DOS command line:

  105.                PKUNZIP VFW11E.ZIP
  106.  
  107.      4) Exit the DOS shell (or WinZIP) and return to the Windows.
  108.      5) Use File Manager to execute the SETUP.EXE file in the directory you
  109.           created.
  110.      6) Follow the on-screen instructions to install Video for Windows.

  117.      1) Follow the instructions given by Apple in the QuickTime download

  123.      1) Use File Manager to create a new directory and copy the AAWIN11.EXE
  124.           file into this new directory.
  125.      2) Use File Manager to execute the AAWIN11.EXE program.  This will expand
  126.           the setup files.
  127.      3) Use File Manager to copy the MCIAAP.DRV file and all other DLL files
  128.           in the directory to your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
  129.      4) Edit the SYSTEM.INI file in your \WINDOWS directory and add the
  130.           following line to the [mci] section (do NOT include the '-->'
  131.           arrow on the left, it's there to show you which line.):

  147.      6) Edit the WIN.INI file in your \WINDOWS directory and add the

  160. HOW TO TEST MCI DRIVERS
  161. =======================
  162. Windows MCI drivers are the most common way to support multimedia files.
  163. Unfortunately, many MCI drivers still have bugs, and these bugs can cause
  164. all kinds of glitches when CPIC attempts to support them.
  165.  
  166. CPIC has been extensively tested with commonly available MCI drivers and has
  167. worked very reliably.  Before you suspect that CPIC is the problem, please
  168. verify that the MCI driver for the type of file you're trying to play works
  169. with the Microsoft Windows Media Player (MPLAYER.EXE in the Windows folder.)

  172.    TO RUN MEDIA PLAYER

  174.      1) Using the File manager, locate the file called MPLAYER.EXE or
  175.           MPLAY32.EXE.
  176.      2) Double click on the media player executable file to execute it.

  179.    TO TEST AN MCI DRIVER

  181.      1) Select 'Open' from the 'File' menu and find a file to test.  You
  182.           can tell the file type by the file's extension (AVI, MOV, MPG,
  183.           WAV, MID, RMI, FLI, etc.)
  184.      2) Click on the "double right arrows" button to start the file
  185.           playing.  If the file plays, then it is possible to set the CPIC
  186.           options so the MCI driver is supported.

  188. IF FILES PLAY IN THE MEDIA PLAYER

  190. If files play using Media Player but do NOT play using CPIC, then the
  191. problem has to do with a bug in the MCI that is being aggravated by an
  192. Options setting in CPIC.  Run CPIC, and select the Mul
